How to Help Your Elderly Loved One to Build a Schedule that Works for Her
Elderly Care Lexington NC
When you’re younger, your schedule is dictated by all the things that you have to do. Now that your elderly loved one is older, she probably still has a lot of things she wants to do, but maybe is having a more difficult time figuring out when to do all of these different activities. Sitting down with her and coming up with a schedule can help to make that easier.
Start with a List of Everything She Wants to Do
Sit down with your loved one and look at all the activities that she wants to make sure she’s able to do. These can include meeting up with friends, taking classes, exercising, and even scheduling appointments. Some of these things only happen once in a while, while others occur regularly. Also, don’t forget to “schedule in” time for your loved one to relax and do nothing. You don’t want her to be overbooked.
Mark Each Item According to Priority
Some of the activities on your loved one’s list are naturally more important than others. Take the time to listen to what her priorities are on the list. You might be surprised to find out which are more important to her and why. The higher priority items are of course the ones that you’ll want to schedule first to make sure that they’re on the schedule.
What Are Your Loved One’s Goals?
It’s important at this point that you start to get a feel for your elderly loved one’s goals. For example, she may want to learn specific skills for a particular reason, making those classes and activities a higher priority for her. Understanding her priorities and her goals helps you to make sure that your loved one is able to accomplish those goals.
Put the Schedule in Writing, But Don’t Forget to Be Flexible
Once your loved one has a handle on her goals, priorities, and the time that it will take in general for her activities, she’s got a basic schedule. That can help your loved one to keep her goals and targets in sight, but it’s important to make sure that there’s still some flexibility involved. Your loved one may enjoy being busy, but she does still need some downtime and time to herself.
Your loved one’s home care providers can help her to tweak her schedule, too.
