SPIRIT OF ’45 CELEBRATION – Honoring World War II Veterans
Home Care Concord NC
Tom Brokaw stated it well in regards to the young men and women who participated in WWII when he said they are the “greatest generation any society has ever produced.” “…a generation of towering achievement and modest demeanor, a legacy of their formative years when they were participants in and witness to sacrifices of the highest order.”
What an honor it was to be among these brave heroes at the second Spirit of ’45 Celebration, honoring our WWII Veterans, on August 28 in Concord, NC. The evening began with a posting of colors by Northwest Cabarrus HS Air Force JROTC. Then we had the National Anthem sung by Tiffany Ashton, the winner of the 2016 Charlotte Music Awards, reigning songwriter of the year, and winner of the Carolina Music Awards.
The program featured Nick Ochsner, investigative reporter, WBTV, Mr. George “Pat” Waters, grandson of General George S. Patton, Retired Major General Cornell A. Wilson, Jr. of the NC governor’s office, and Governor Pat McCrory. We were moved and inspired through the stories of sacrifice and bravery.
There were many veterans present who were purple heart recipients as well as other decorated heroes. Each veteran had the opportunity to get their picture taken and put up on a slideshow shown before the meal was served. There was also a group photo taken of all the WWII men and women veterans.
The evening highlight was a great performance by “Letters From Home” performing in the spirit and style of the 40’s. Their singing and dancing was phenomenal and they included some of the veterans in their routines, much to their surprise!
Thank you to Hospice and Palliative Carecenter and Rowan Hospice and Palliative Care for hosting this event again this year. Thank you to the many sponsors. Most of all, thank you to these WWII Veterans and all the other veterans that we honored at this event.
