Parkinson’s Symposium
Dr. James P. Battista, a Novant Health Neuroscience neurologist and movement specialist, was the keynote speaker at the first annual Parkinson’s Symposium held First Baptist Church of Salisbury on Tuesday, October 3. The event participants numbering around 60 came from Statesville, Asheboro, Charlotte, Concord and Rowan County. Other presenters included: Jessica Rivera, program manager and physical therapist and Amanda Davis, physical therapist, both of Novant Health who shared about the LSVT BIG and LOUD programs especially helpful in managing the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. Richard Reinholz, MS of the JF Hurley YMCA shared about the importance of socialization and exercise. Randy Brown delighted the attendees with his quick wit and humor, sharing how humor has helped him to cope with the challenges he has had in his journey with Parkinson’s Disease.
There were several vendors that attended to provide information and support for the attendees which included our local Medicine Shoppe, Hearing Solutions of NC, and the JF Hurley YMCA. Many vendors helped to organize this event and much thanks to the following: Accelerate Therapy and Performance, The Meadows of Rockwell, Brookdale of Salisbury, Laurels of Salisbury, Kindred at Home, Liberty Home Equity Solutions, Penrod Medical Equipment, Smart Changes Household Move Management and TenderHearted Home Care. The Parkinson’s Association of the Carolina’s was also represented by Dianna Beaty, who brought much helpful information and assisted with the event.
The event was coordinated through the volunteers of the local Parkinson’s Support Group in Rowan County, headed up by Renee Gray of TenderHearted Home Care and Karen Webb. Mary Ann Karriker was instrumental in organizing the support group volunteers. The group meets the first Tuesdays of each month at the First Presbyterian Church in Salisbury from 1:00 – 2:00 PM.
