National Procrastination Week: What Have You Been Putting Off?
March 5-11 is National Procrastination Week. While it can be a lot of fun to laugh off the concept of procrastination, the act of procrastination usually means you’re not doing something you should be doing by avoiding it.
As a caregiver for an aging loved one, you have a lot on your plate as you take care of your elderly loved one, take care of your immediate family (like children and spouse), take care of your career or employment responsibilities and so much more. So, for you, what most likely gets procrastinated is yourself. It can seem like just too much to take preventative care of yourself as you give so much time and effort to care for others.
But use this week to stop procrastinating on taking care of yourself. Have a conversation with family or your elder care team about how they can take some time to care for your elderly loved one so you can take some time to take care of yourself.
What have you been procrastinating?
Physical Care
Maybe this is the week to resign up for the gym or recommit to a regular exercise program to help your body stay healthy and have the energy it needs to care for others. Regular exercise not only keeps your body in better health but greatly improves your mental health as well so if you’ve put this on the back burner, this is the week to give it the attention it needs. Your elder care team can coordinate care for your loved one as you plan your workout schedule.
Pampering Care
How long has it been since you’ve had your nails done, received a massage, or had your hair cut and styled? These non-essential self-care tasks are often forgotten about while you care for another but can be an important part of your positive well-being. It’s not selfish to ask your elder care provider to help with your loved one for a few hours a week so you can focus on pampering experiences that bring you joy and help you have a positive self-image. As you feel better about yourself, you’ll find you’ll do a better job at caring for those around you.
Car Care
Those routine car maintenance tasks are not always fun things to put on our schedule, but maintaining a well-cared-for car can keep you safe and extend the life of your care. Even if you simply need to have the car cleaned out for driving your loved one around, it can provide a little more peace to that drive. Use this week to check your car log and see if there are any routine checks you accidentally skipped over this past year.
Relationship Care
Are there other relationships that you have had to sideline as you care for your loved one? This would be a great week to schedule a lunch date or cocktail hour with an old friend you haven’t seen in a while or even a spouse that you haven’t had the time to have some one-on-one time with.
Don’t put off taking care of yourself any longer. You deserve care as much as anyone else.
