Home Care Services Should Be the First Option for an Aging Loved One
A lot of families think home care services should be the last option when an elderly loved one requires assistance. They assume it’s their responsibility to take care of their aging parent or grandparent. This is especially true when that adult child lives in the same town or at least close enough that it makes sense to stop by every other day or even every day during the week.
Why home care services are the better option
First and foremost, most people assume since they have a personal relationship with this elderly individual that they are best suited to provide care and support. A home care aide, especially somebody who works for an agency, often has a great deal of experience doing this work. They’ve worked with other seniors, many of whom are facing the same challenges this family member is.
That experience can go a long way to not just providing emotional and physical support, but also offering more comfort for the senior. Keep in mind that an aging parent may have difficulty getting up from a chair, getting out of bed, and doing other basic tasks. Are they going to be comfortable with their adult daughter or son helping them into and out of the shower? They very well might not.
What home care services offer
There are many home care options available, including a home care aide, visiting nurse, and physical therapist. Aides are the most common caregivers people consider and these are individuals who assist with many basic tasks around the house. They can help seniors get out of bed, get dressed, with bathing, toileting, doing laundry, preparing meals, and much more.
Many of these home care aides will also provide transportation to help their elderly clients go to the store to do some shopping, get to a doctor’s appointment, and sometimes even to visit with friends.
What about the cost?
Sometimes cost is certainly an issue for families. However, when people begin to calculate in the cost of their own time, driving to and from their loved one’s house, and realize that hiring a home care aide is the most affordable senior care option there is, the cost becomes negligible. When hiring through an agency families can get a caregiver for just a couple of hours a day, even for just a couple of days a week to start.
These are just a few simple reasons why home care should be the first option when a senior needs help.
